How to become an
Electrician

The Guide

This is a simple guide to the two main routes on becoming an electrician.

These are the industry recognised routes and not a “unique approach.”

Who is the Diploma NVQ route for?

The Diploma NVQ route is ideal Electrician training course for adult learners, both new to the industry and those with experience. You will start on the 2365 Level 2 Diploma, progress onto the 2365 Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations after which you can follow up with the 2357 NVQ portfolio.

You will be able to work in the industry alongside your qualifications taking on new more comprehensive roles as you progress in your studies. Taking on roles such as Electrical Labourer, Electricians mate or electrical improver.

You will be able to study around your work, as we offer evening, weekend or online versions of the courses. Being able to study around a full time job and still being able to complete the courses in a short period of time is the massive benefit of The Guilds programs. You’ll be glad to hear we do not require you to attend for block bookings, that require an unrealistic amount of holidays or leave.

Anchor 1

Many learners now complete the NVQ and get their JIB ECS “Gold Card.” The NVQ can take 1-3 years to complete with our students being aiming for completion within the first year. You will be working in the industry gathering evidence to complete the 2357 NVQ portfolio.

Most providers take 2-3 years to complete their NVQ, if you have the variety in your job to gather suitable evidence, you can complete your 2357 NVQ in as little as 6-9 months.

Once you have completed the 2357 NVQ (including AM2) you will have covered the same knowledge training and assessments as someone completing a full 4 year apprenticeship.
